Visit of Dr. Simon P. Worden, Director of the NASA Ames Research Center, and COL Karol J. Bobko, Former NASA Astronaut

The Embassy of the United States of America is pleased to announce the visit of Dr. Simon P. Worden and COL Karol J. Bobko to Lithuania from November 14-19, 2011.

During their visit, Dr. Worden and COL Bobko will be attending the Space Economy in the Multi Polar World (SEMWO) 2011 Conference as well as presenting to Kaunas and Vilnius University faculty. COL Bobko will be participating in an outreach event at the Vilnius Planetarium to school students, and Dr. Worden will be giving presentations at two local high schools.

Dr. Simon P. Worden is the current NASA Ames Research Center director. Prior to becoming Ames’ director, Worden was a Research Professor of Astronomy, Optical Sciences and Planetary Sciences at the University of Arizona. In addition to his former position with the University of Arizona, Worden previously served as a consultant to the Defense Advanced Research

Projects Agency (DARPA) on space-related issues. Worden retired in 2004 after 29 years of active service in the United States Air Force. This is his second visit to Lithuania.

COL Bobko is a former NASA Astronaut of Lithuanian descent. A veteran of three space flights, Bobko has logged a total of 386 hours in Space. He was the pilot on STS-6 (April 4-9, 1983); and was the mission commander on STS-51D (April 12-19, 1985) and STS-51J (October 3-7, 1985).

On November 16 from 3-4pm there will be an open press conference with COL Bobko and a former Russian Cosmonaut in the Radisson Blu Lietuva. From 4-5pm journalists are invited to participate in a roundtable discussion with COL Bobko and Dr. Worden in the hotel’s lobby bar.
